The Cherry Dipped Ice Cream Cone
I have painted a couple of cherry dipped ice cream cones in my art career. Like I do for almost everything, I used my own reference photos. The cherry dipped ice cream cone is such an iconic and nostalgic treat, but the truth is that in real life at the ice cream shop, they are usually a bit wonky-looking! So at times, I have to use some imagination to get my reference photos to work.
For this hyperrealism painting, I used the original reference photo, taken by my sister on an outing with her kids (as a favor to me!), and spiced it up a bit in my Photoshop program, so that it took on some of the more graceful, soft curves we usually think of. Who knows, maybe someday I'll paint the straight up wonky dipped cone, but for now, I think this one turned out pretty colorful and happy-looking.
As with most of my paintings (and prints), you won't be able to see many brushstrokes in this open-edition print. I work really hard to hide my brushstrokes and create a bit of trompe l-oeil-ish magic. Keeping in mind that acrylic dries fast, I work in lots of quick layers, so getting the soft, even glow of the red dip and the shadows was a real challenge. Thanks for looking!

Where to Display Your Print
While many people automatically think "kitchen art" as a display space for pieces, my ice cream prints, like this piece, are pretty versatile. I've seen many clients feature their prints in unconventional spaces: bedrooms, hallways, game rooms, offices and above their entertainment centers. Click here to see an example of a bedroom that features several of my ice cream prints. Pairing or grouping prints together can be a great solution to create a really fun space that looks high-end, yet extremely welcoming. It's whimsical home decor you can really fit just about any space where you need a pop of color, joy and nostalgia.
