"Beautiful Day in the Gingerbread Neighborhood," acrylic on panel, 36" x 48. Professionally framed in a contemporary white floater frame. Based on a real-life gingerbread house/sugar cookie/frosting model that I baked and decorated and then replicated with acrylic paint in the trompe l'oeil style. This means that the painting is virtually flat, but it is painted in a way that looks amazingly three-dimensional and highly realistic in its details.
"Beautiful Day in the Gingerbread Neighborhood" features a whimsical gingerbread neighborhood with five distinctly decorated adjacent row houses, a swirling blue frosting sky filled with a bright cookie sun and three cookie clouds, as well as three cookie oak trees (featuring dry Lucky Charms cereal coated in green frosting as the greenery, similar green shrubs and wafer cookie window boxes, and six animal friends, either in cookie form or silhouetted in the candy windows. Each home features a unique "lucky charm" over its doorway.
Each "house" features a unique set of food-based design elements. The first home is the "brownstone," featuring pieces of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal as the stone bricks, a wafer cookie architectural detail at the top and purple candy windows, one of which houses a silhouetted fish friend in a fishbowl. House two is the "pastel" house, with frosted yellow walls and golden candy windows, and a Necco candy wafer roof with a whimsical gable window that features an oddly-colored bright green candy window, implying that this window was perhaps broken and replaced or constructed later (since it does not match the others). House three is the "heart" house, with pink frosted walls, glowing red candy windows (including a central heart-shaped window), a roof tiled with heart-shaped marshmallows and silhouetted bunny in the gable window at the top, keeping watch over the neighborhood. House four is the rainbow house, which mostly showcases the gingerbread base, but also bright blue candy windows -- one of which features a silhouetted cat, seemingly dreaming of climbing the "tree" in its view -- and some blue frosting architectural details with Cinnamon Crunch cereal stonework. Finally, house five is the "nut" house, with a white-stucco-frosted exterior, stone accents made from mixed nuts and glowing green candy windows with a distinct lizard-shaped silhouette in one. Finally, on the ground in front of the buildings, we find a sole decorated cookie puppy dog, considering his business at a cookie fire hydrant, while a cookie cat two houses down casts an over-the-shoulder gaze at the dog, wondering perhaps why he is distracting her from her intent to climb the cookie and cereal tree.
Each element of this large painting was created using many overlapping glazes of acrylic paint, applied with tiny brushes. From a technical standpoint, it exudes an amazing sense of three-dimensionality, despite being completely flat. The cookie and candy elements set against the swirling frosting grass and sky truly pop, making this piece feel almost like a suspended three-dimensional animated scene, filled with so many details there is always something new to find and enjoy.
The piece is meant to stand a joyful statement about the beauty of diversity and how everyone's uniqueness, when combined together, creates a place that is much more beautiful and interesting than would ever be possible standing alone. Each house is unique -- featuring unique design tastes, each tree is unique -- oak trees of different breeds reflecting again a wide variety of option, each animal is unique. But all of it comes together under a bright sun and blue sky to make something beautiful.
I use cookies and frosting as the basic for these foodscape paintings because I want the works to be accessible to a wide range of people. Using food elements, and particularly recognizable sweet treats, allows an easier entry point for viewers to enjoy and thoughtfully consider the work.
