I wanted to see if I could create a small scene in which I could instill life and whimsy into cookies and frosting. I purposely designed the piece to include lots of swoopy shapes in my frosting model, to mimic the wind blowing through the air and sky. I choose this simple scene, inspired from my childhood, to portray the simple and inherent beauty of nature when it's simply left alone to thrive. Nature \"dances\" with all of its parts in harmony. This was the first piece from my trompe l'oeil series that I designed, at a time when I knew I wanted to use a gingerbread house and cookies, but wasn't quite sure how. I literally built the full small gingerbread house first and let it sit on my counter for probably a week, just staring at it. Eventually, I thought, I'm a pretty good trompe l'oeil painter, what if I just chopped off the back? So I sawed off the back two-thirds of the house and began arranging it with the cookies I'd baked. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike most of my foodscape paintings, I wanted this piece to stand for hope. The whimsical nature of the design demonstrates an existence that has perhaps become a bit overwhelming, surrounded by a homestead that is seemingly a bit neglected, with overgrown greenery and oversized flowers and lollipops. There isn't a clear path to the imaginary door. But the sun, in all its optimistic glory, gives the scene a semblance of hope, as well as warmth and the satisfaction that even when things aren't perfect, joy can still be found. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor those who wonder why I use cookies and frosting as the basic for these foodscapes, I really wanted the works to be accessible to a wide range of people. This piece was inspired by a myriad of things, including a love of animals and the peace of pumpkin patches and sunsets; however, it also speaks to a sense of childlike optimism, feeling that the little kitten (who is clearly cared for, by way of her pink collar) is simply lost in the joy of chasing the butterfly. It doesn't seem predatory or hostile, just filled with joy, wondering what it is that she sees, where it's going, and should she follow it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFrom a technical point of view, this painting looks awesomely three-dimensional, despite being flat. While designing it, I really wanted to experiment with something beyond just the blue skies I'd been using, and so I mixed up several colors and swooped them on my model surface to design the sunset and grass before layering the cookies on top. Note that the kitten is actually not one cookie, but three, with the legs giving extra dimension. This was another thing I really wanted to experiment with -- trying to build up some of my subjects to look even more dimensional from multiple layers of structure, almost like a puppet. My family and I always had to wait at the tracks in our car to cross back to or from our home. I'd often site in the back seat and try to count the cars of the freight trains, but the passenger trains? My imagination took off! I'd wonder about all of the people inside the train, where they were going, what made them choose a train instead of other more boring transportation. Passenger trains, to me, were magical. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike all of the piece in my trompe l'oeil foodscape series, I wanted \"Night Train\" to stand for hope. I think it's a beautiful magical moment filled with great rushing motion and a flurry of activity, yet incredibly peaceful and quiet. I imagined that all of the people in the train were so happy, just to be able to enjoy the train and the night sky. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThis piece has a bit more variety of food objects in it than my others: gingerbread train, cookie stars and bunny, and the wafer cookie tracks with the candy wheels. House two is the \"pastel\" house, with frosted yellow walls and golden candy windows, and a Necco candy wafer roof with a whimsical gable window that features an oddly-colored bright green candy window, implying that this window was perhaps broken and replaced or constructed later (since it does not match the others). House three is the \"heart\" house, with pink frosted walls, glowing red candy windows (including a central heart-shaped window), a roof tiled with heart-shaped marshmallows and silhouetted bunny in the gable window at the top, keeping watch over the neighborhood. House four is the rainbow house, which mostly showcases the gingerbread base, but also bright blue candy windows -- one of which features a silhouetted cat, seemingly dreaming of climbing the \"tree\" in its view -- and some blue frosting architectural details with Cinnamon Crunch cereal stonework. Finally, house five is the \"nut\" house, with a white-stucco-frosted exterior, stone accents made from mixed nuts and glowing green candy windows with a distinct lizard-shaped silhouette in one. Unframed. I spent a late evening toasting various marshmallows on sticks to create a reference image, then attempted to do a quick form and color study while live streaming the process. Although I've never painted toasted marshmallows before, I think I was able to capture the toastiness and caramelization, as well as some of the weight of the toasted marshmallows, despite the time constraint. I opted to give it a bit of a trompe l'oeil-ish effect, where the marshmallows and stick included the illusion of cast shadows on the panel surface.
